Obituary

Jackson “Jack” McSwain Hemby, 91, passed away Friday April 2, 2021.Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Tuesday April 6, 2021 at Gordon Funeral Service. A graveside service will be held at Waxhaw City Cemetery at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, April 6, 2021. Jack was born March 30, 1930 in Union County, son of the late Samuel E. and Maggie Howey Hemby. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant and Squad Leader. He stood honor guard for Prince Phillip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II. After returning from service Jack attended Burton’s Institute in Charlotte. Jack owned many successful small businesses in and around the Waxhaw area. He proudly served on the BB&T board and served as a Waxhaw Town Commissioner and Mayor of Waxhaw. Jack is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pressley Hemby; son, Scott Hemby, wife Nina of Monroe; daughters, Bonnie Elizabeth Hemby of Minnesota, Terry Ellen Michaelson and husband Chris of Waxhaw and Jackie Denise Cox of Monroe; step-daughter, Beth Morgan of Charlotte and husband Rex; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W, Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC, 28110.
