Addie Blair Witmore

Addie Blair Witmore, 94, passed away Monday, May 20, 2019. She was born March 23, 1925 in Union County daughter of the late Jonah & Cora Howard Nance. She is also preceded in death by her husband Clyde Witmore, a son Carlton Witmore, three brothers; Wilson Nance, Lavon Nance and Clay Nance, and a sister Virginia Sides. Funeral arrangements will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday May 25, 2019 in Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service. As a New Salem High School graduate of 1942 from the last 11-year education program, Addie began one of her many careers during her lifetime. She worked at Cannon Mills in Concord, NC until meeting her husband, Clyde, in 1949. This began Addie’s demonstrating the love of Christ’s through her servant’s heart to her husband Clyde for 40 years until his death in 1989 and to her children and grandchildren. She served as a member of Benton Heights Baptist Church for about 65 years. During that time Addie not only attended faithfully but volunteered by counting the offering after services and serving in the children’s nursery. In the mid-1960’s, she began her 10-year career as a school cross guard at Benton Heights Elementary school. Daily she read her bible as she waited for children wanting to cross. Addie then began her 20-year career at Hathaway’s Fried Chicken in Monroe, serving each person with friendly conversation and smiles. In addition to all this, Addie managed her husband’s chicken delivery business into the late 1970’s and the family’s rental properties well into her 80’s. Addie had many friends and loved traveling with them or other relatives, taking her to experience Germany and most of the USA. Addie is survived by a son Myron Witmore of Richardson, TX, two daughters; Dale McCutcheon of Monroe, and Barbara Witmore of La Plata New Mexico, a brother Hoover Nance of Mint Hill, a sister Betty Jackson Coughlin of Charlotte and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren Memorials may be made to Benton Heights Baptist Church, 1411 Helms St. Monroe, NC 28110. If attending funeral services for Addie Witmore, please wear a piece of “Red”, which was Addie’s favorite color, in honor to celebrate her life today.
