Alberta “Bert” Hearn Toms, 93, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2017. She was born in Badin, NC on November 15, 1923, daughter to the late John Willoughby, Sr. and Lillie Richardson Hearn. She is also preceded in death by her loving husband Henry C. “Hap” Toms. Early in Ms. Toms’ life (1940’s) she worked in civil service in the accounting department at Camp Sutton in Monroe, NC and later transferred to Barksdale Army Base in Bossier City, Louisiana where she met the love of her life, Hap. When he saw her he told his friend, I am going to marry that girl. She had on a printed dress with pennies and he began calling her Penny from that day on. They enjoyed living in many different cities before settling in Monroe. Ms. Toms worked for her brother, Dr. John W. Hearn Jr. for over 20 years where she managed the office and did bookkeeping. Even in her last days her memory was so sharp she could recall the patients and their phone numbers. Many relatives came often to her home to feast on her famous fried chicken and homemade pies, which she loved to share. She will be greatly missed by many friends and loved ones. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will be held at a later date. Ms. Toms was survived by her son, Ted Toms of Monroe, NC, sister, Teri Toms Ward, husband Don of Charlotte, NC, Brother Dr. John W. Hearn Jr. of Monroe, NC, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to be made to Central United Methodist Church, 801 S Hayne St, Monroe, NC 28112. Gordon Funeral Service Crematory is caring for the Toms family.
