Alfred Oscar 'Pete' Sartain

Alfred Oscar “Pete” Sartain, 87, died peacefully at his home in Monroe on Monday, June 23, 2014. He was born May 10, 1927 in Royston, GA to Alfred O. and Mae Dean Sartain. He was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters-William E. Sartain, Louise Sartain Mills, Samuel Dean (Jack) Sartain, John Guy Sartain, Mary Alice Sartain Howie, Virginia Sartain Parks, Howard Ray (Buddy) Sartain and Jewel Sartain Ferguson. Pete is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann Carpenter Sartain of Monroe, NC; three children, Kathy Sartain Judge (Larry) of Pawleys Island, SC; David Allen Sartain (Cindy) of Weddington, NC and Joseph Al Sartain (Jane) of Elkin, NC; five grandchildren, Sarah Judge, Lizzie Tucker, Emmy Baucom, Lily Sartain and Tate Sartain; and three great-grandchildren, Owen, Vera and Tripp. He was also the proud uncle to 31 nieces and nephews. Pete graduated from Royston High School in 1944 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served during the final years of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He returned to the U.S. and attended the University of Georgia, beginning his life-long passion with the Bulldogs. His favorite colors were red and black; his children were not allowed to wear orange and he wore a UGA cap until his final days. Pete’s career was in the road construction industry. He partnered with his father-in-law, forming Gus Carpenter, Inc., based in McCormick, SC, where he worked until his retirement. His loves in life were his family, a good round of golf and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple and Central United Methodist Church. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to his caregivers-Queenette, Phyllis, Erica, Toni, Vickie, Elbert and Khara, as well as Hospice of Union County. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 AM in Central United Methodist Church, Monroe, NC. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110 or Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
