Alice Hobson Malcolm

October 10, 1930 — September 6, 2022

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Alice Hobson Malcolm, 91, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2022.

Ms. Alice, as she was lovingly known, was born on October 10, 1930 in Yadkin County, North Carolina. Daughter to the late Lunford Winfield Hobson and Fanny Pearl Choplin Hobson. She is also preceded in death by her husband Leigh Malcolm, a daughter, Darlene Brandon, five brothers and two sisters.

She grew up in Yadkinville and graduated in 1948 from Courtney High School. Her love of sports began there, where she played basketball and never let her girls forget that she was in the Beta Club. After graduation she was employed by Hanes Knitting in Winston Salem. While there she was crowned Miss Hanes 1949 and traveled in North Carolina representing Hanes Corporation.

Alice met her husband, Leigh Malcolm, while both were employed at Hanes. They were married 57 years before his death in 2006. Their marriage was filled with a deep, faithful love for each other. They built their lives together around their faith in God and service to their church. Donna, Dy-Ann and Darlene, as they always referred to as “the girls” were always the center of their lives, whether driving to one of Donna’s basketball games, or attending Dy-Ann or Darlene’s piano recitals and music concerts. She was devoted to her husband and family and taught them by example how to live a life centered on service, grace and love.

When the family moved to Monroe in 1964, they joined Sutton Park Baptist Church, and later Morgan Mill Road Baptist Church of which they were founding members. Morgan Mill Road Baptist Church and Lee Park Baptist Church joined as one and became one body in Christ, which is now Lee Park Church. Over the years she held many different positions throughout the church. One of her favorite roles was being a greeter at Lee Park, which gave her the opportunity to speak to all who entered the church doors. Alice was very faithful and dedicated to all areas of her church.

One of Alice’s true joys was to visit the local nursing facilities each Monday. She enjoyed her time spent with her friends as much as they enjoyed her being there. In addition, she volunteered with Red Cross of Union County and was a Pink Lady at Union Memorial Hospital. She was a 37-year member of Monroe Civitan Club and was awarded a Lifetime Membership in 2022. Her work experience in Monroe included Acme Nameplate and Union County Transportation.

Alice never met a stranger. Her sweet smile and laughter warmed all those she met, and her welcoming demeanor were ever present. She loved her family and friends dearly and was loved in return by them.

Alice is survived by her daughters Donna Menius (David), Dy-Ann Sturgis (Neil),
