Andrew (Andy) Vansickle Talmadge

August 31, 1937 — February 1, 2024

Andrew (Andy) VanSickle Talmadge, 86, of Monroe, NC passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024. He was born in Orange Co., NJ on August 31, 1937, the son of the late James Talmadge and Christina Enright Talmadge. He is also preceded in death by his son, Timothy (Tim) John Talmadge, eight brothers: James, Robert, George, Steven, Thomas, Russell, Ronald, and Donald, and seven sisters: Betty, Kay, Dorris, Helen, Nancy, Lillian, and Jane.


Andy worked for nearly 40 years for Vanguard Supreme (Singer Corporation). His heart was always on the basketball court as he loved the game. He played and coached in the industrial league, coached children, and played and coached adult church leagues, and coached the PAL league as well. He also loved the game of Checkers. Back in 1960, Andy pointed out an error made by the world champion checker player, Tommy Wiswell, after finding it in one of his books. Tommy contacted Andy, agreed with him, and wanted to meet and play him in a game of checkers. Andy was also an avid coin collector.


The Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in the chapel of Gordon Funeral Service with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and family from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112.


Andy is survived by his loving wife of 65 ½ years, Kathleen Hill Talmadge, and two sons; Andrew Talmadge (Debbie) and Adam Talmadge (Monica) and one daughter, Lisa Talmadge (Gil), one sister, Christina Freligh (John), seven grandchildren: Nicholas Talmadge, Alexander Talmadge, Zeek Talmadge, Zak Talmadge, Kathleen Talmadge, John Trull and Abigail Keziah, one great-grandchild, Ana Jolene Trull and many nieces and nephews.
