Arnold Oren Helms

Mr. Arnold Oren Helms, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, July 5, 2018. Arnold was born April 24, 1935 in Union County, NC and was the son of the late Robert Oren Helms, Sr. and Bessie Aycoth Helms. He retired in 2013 as President of Robert O. Helms Co., a business started by his father in 1935 and was a dedicated and active member of his community. He was a former member of the BBT Advisory Board, the City of Monroe Planning and Development Board, the Monroe Optimist Club and was a Mason. At Shiloh Baptist Church, Arnold served as a deacon, church choir member and volunteered on various committees during his longtime membership. He loved the North Carolina Mountains and, for many years, owned vacation homes in Beech Mountain and Blowing Rock. Arnold will be remembered as a kind and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Shiloh Baptist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. until 2:45p.m., at the church. Arnold is survived by his loving wife, Alva Price Helms; son, Danny Helms and wife, DeAnn; daughters, Fran Moore and husband, Rick and Tina Johnson and husband, Robb, all of Monroe; one brother, Robert O’ Helms Jr. of Monroe; sisters, Coleen Norton of Banner Elk and Brenda Wilhelm of Monroe; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Shiloh Baptist Church, 2301 North Rocky River Rd, Monroe, NC 28110. Online condolences may be made at www.gordonfuneralservice.com
