Mrs. Barbara Anne Baker (née Godwin) of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, December 8, 2017 at the age of 84. Barbara was born to her parents, Elzie Mitchell Godwin and Mildred Elizabeth McLaurin Godwin, on September 11, 1933 in Morven, NC. She graduated from Morven High School and was salutatorian of her class. After graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Hoyle Baker. Though predeceased by Bobby, they enjoyed 49 years of marriage and became the parents of nine children. After marriage, the couple moved to Charlotte, N.C. Barbara was a stay-at-home mother for much of her life. After many of the children were grown, she became a daycare center teacher. She remained in this position until retirement. When she retired, she moved to Pageland, S.C. to live with her eldest daughter, Libby. In 2016, she returned to Charlotte to live with her youngest daughter, Laurie. Barbara loved watching the waves at the beach, solving word puzzles, watching game shows on television and spending time with her family. She dearly loved all of her grandchildren and, at Thanksgiving of this year, was able to meet her first great-grandchild. Barbara was predeceased by her granddaughter, Karen Marie Baker. She was also predeceased by her parents, her brother, Elzie Mitchell Godwin, Jr., and her sister, Margaret Leigh Phillips. Barbara is survived by her children, Libby (Barbara Maier) Baker of Pageland, SC, Johnny (Pam) Baker of Charlotte, NC, Jimmy (Monnie) Baker of Woodstock, GA, Sherry (Gonz) Enciso of Houston, TX, Kathy (Marty) Simpson of Summerfield, NC, Bobbie (Ugo) Iovenitti of Mandeville, LA, Bonnie (Dan) Rice of Charlotte, NC, Randy (Marcia) Baker of Heath Springs, SC and Laurie Anne Baker of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her fourteen grandchildren, Holly (Brandon) Schepke, Katie Baker, Amie (Josh Johnson) Baker, Adam (Heather Hampton) Baker, Edward (Linda) Enciso, Charlie Enciso, Jamie Enciso, Callie Simpson, Trey Simpson, Cody Simpson, Dominic Iovenitti, Dante Iovenitti, Griffin (Nicole) Rice and Ellie Rice and her great-grandchild, Willa Marie Schepke. The family would like to express special thanks to her wonderful, round-the-clock caregivers. Those include Samantha Oranchak, Sandra Garcia, Rena Donaldson, Linda Kee, Maegan Hinson, and Donna Hicks. These women became family to Barbara and were God’s angels on earth for the family members. Barbara’s wishes were to be cremated and have her ashes spread in the ocean. There will be a memorial funeral service held in the chapel of Gordon’s Funeral Home, in Monroe, NC on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 2:00PM. The family will receive family and friends immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (Disabled Veterans), St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice.
