Born November 27, 1941 in Union County, Barbara was the daughter of the late Mr. Coble Funderburk and Mrs. Faire Lathan Funderburk. Survivors include two brothers, Jim Funderburk of Gastonia and Leonard Jerry Funderburk (Patricia Irene) of Monroe. She is survived by one niece and one nephew as well as one grandnephew.
Barbara served as State Regent of the North Carolina State Society of Daughters of American Colonies. She has been active in the local DAC by sharing a project that contained names of women born in North Carolina prior to 1776. This project was accompanied by a four-by-six-foot portrait of a colonial woman with flag. It has been displayed in several areas in Union County and currently resides in the Marshville Museum and Cultural Center in Marshville, North Carolina. She was commissioned to paint four murals for The Children’s section in each Union County Library. This includes the Monroe Branch, the Lois Morgan Edwards Memorial Library Branch in Marshville, the Union West Branch in Indian Trail and the Southwest Regional Library in Waxhaw.
Barbara wrote a book titled, Count Their Lives in Woman Years. The farms and rolling countryside of North Carolina’s southern Piedmont area in the early 20th century were dotted with women who measured their lives in “womanyears”-not the numerical listing of days, weeks and months, but in the gentle spiral of life in its folds. A year is much more than a number to them. It was meant to measure the size of things in their own world…“it’s the year the big storm came” or “the year the littlest was born” or “the year Pa died”.
