Barry Asgill Helms

Barry Asgill Helms, 72, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, November 13, 2014, following a long, courageous battle with lung cancer and congestive heart failure. He was born May 27, 1942 in Union County son of the late Willie Clay and Ruth Baucom Helms. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church, officiated by Elder Newell Helms and Elder Jared Smith. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Barry was a devoted member of Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church for more than 50 years where he served as a deacon and treasurer for more than 30 years. He loved his church family and was deeply saddened when he could no longer attend services because of his declining health. He was the owner of Barry Helms Chevrolet-Pontiac in Pageland SC, and he enjoyed spending time at Lake Tillery boating and fishing with his wife, children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. Mr. Helms is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years Carolyn Morgan Helms, a son Clay Helms and wife Janet of Monroe, a daughter Pam Shoemaker and husband Dale of Gastonia, two brothers Elder Newell Helms and wife Pat of Monroe, Bob Helms of Norwood, a sister Colleen Cox and husband Clinton of Monroe, four grandchildren Anna Helms, Ben Helms, Madison Shoemaker and Caroline Shoemaker. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Gordon Funeral Service Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe NC 28112.
