Benson Kenneth Carpenter III, affectionately known to his family and friends as "Benny," age 72, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, while vacationing at the beach, his absolute favorite place to be.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at New Hope Southern Methodist Church, 3221 Plyler Mill Road, Monroe, NC 28112, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00AM until 10:45AM in the church.
Born in Monroe on February 16, 1954, Benny lived a life rooted in faith, family, and community service. He was a devoted, faithful member of New Hope Church in Monroe, where he cherished cooking and fellowship with the men’s group for numerous church functions. Known throughout the community for his culinary skills, Benny was famous for his legendary BBQ, which brought people together time and time again.
Benny was a proud Master Mason and member of Monroe Lodge # 244 for over 27 years. He spent years selflessly serving his neighbors as a volunteer with the Sandy Ridge Fire and Rescue. When he wasn't behind the grill or answering calls to help others, he was happiest outdoors, hunting and fishing with his close group of friends at a local farm.
He was married for 51 wonderful years to the love of his life, Patricia Carpenter.
Benny was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Frances Carpenter, and his brother, Greg Carpenter.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; his children, Casey Carpenter (Trish), Matthew Carpenter (Julie), and Jessica Purser (Dustin); his grandchildren, Layla, Mya, Wyatt, Rebecca, Bailey, and Chloe; and his great-granddaughter, Raelynn. He is also survived by his brother, Bryan Carpenter (Cathy); his sister-in-law, Jane Carpenter; and an extended network of church family, fellow volunteers, and dear friends.
