Betsy Lee Griffin

October 10, 1925 — December 13, 2024

Betsy Lee Griffin, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2024, at The Cypress of Charlotte Stewart Health Center. She was born October 10, 1925, in Monroe, NC, daughter of the late Andrew McConnell Lee and Christine Marsh Lee, and was the beloved wife for 62 years of her late husband C. Frank Griffin. Frank and Betsy were proud residents of Monroe, living in Union County until they retired to The Cypress of Charlotte in 2000.

Betsy covered so much ground during her 99 years of life. She was organized, dependable, and embodied a certain breed of lady that is now in steady decline. Best known as “Mabets” by her grandchildren and “Bets” by her great grandsons, she was the true epitome of a southern lady. She enjoyed keeping an orderly and welcoming home, emphasized the importance of a well-written thank you note, set a pristine table, always acknowledged each holiday or birthday, and was never caught without her lipstick on. A loyal TarHeel basketball fan to the end, Betsy’s generosity shined most through her love of cooking and caring for family, friends, and strangers alike. Her heart of gold will continue to shine through all she came in contact with over her long and full life.

She is survived by her daughters, Pamela G. Toledano and Tina G. Rice; grandchildren Griffin Boiter, Sally Bunting (Josh), Andrew Rice, and Caroline Rice; great grandsons James McConnell Bunting, Ward Hughes Bunting and Kevin Beau Bunting; her granddog and frequent companion in recent years, Leo; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by her brother Bill M. Lee (Frankie) and her son-in-law Arthur P. Rice.

According to Betsy’s wishes, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe, NC.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all of Betsy’s caregivers, especially Sonia Agaton, who so lovingly cared for her in her last year. Special thanks also go to the many wonderful Cypress Building D neighbors, friends, and the caring staff members of both the Cypress and Stewart Health Center who blessed her life in so many ways during their last years together. Your outpouring of love and support is forever remembered and appreciated.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Central United Church, 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, NC, 28112 or First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC, 28202.
