Betty Sue Clark Carnes, 81, died peacefully at her home during the early morning hours of February 11, 2014. Her husband of 61 years, Millon, was by her side, as he has been during the years of her extended illness. Betty Sue was the daughter of the late Ottis McCray McManus and the late George Clark. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, James McManus and most recently by her son, Mike Carnes. She graduated valedictorian from Pageland High School and then had a long career in banking and customer service. She retired from UCB/BBT in 1995 and continued her service to others through church and community activities. Memorial services will be Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2:00 PM in Wolf Pond Baptist Church, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends and relatives Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM in Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. She is survived by her husband, Millon Carnes, Sr.; daughter, Emily (John) Lowery; daughter-in-law, Elaine Carnes; grandchildren, Leslie (Smyth) Redfern, Ashley (Jeff) Carnes, and Joshua (Ashley) Lowery; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa Redfern, Eli Redfern, Kellen Lowery and Paxon Lowery. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret Greene, Patsy Blackburn, Nelda Richardson; and brother, Roger McManus, as well as nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Cooking for her family was her joy, and serving her community family of faith was her greatest witness. Betty Sue was a special friend to all she met. She had a remarkable gift of communication and with it she could humor or encourage you, share joy or sorrow, and most of all, she could pray for you.
