Betty Lathan Morgan

Betty Lathan Morgan, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. She was born on March 8, 1929 in Union County, NC, daughter of the late Horace Leond Lathan, Sr., and the late Lillian Mae Belk Lathan. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Horace L. Lathan, Jr. A graduate of Prospect School and Women’s College (UNC-G), Mrs. Morgan was a teacher in the Monroe City School System (later Union County Schools) for 31 years, having taught business courses at Benton Heights School and Monroe High School during that time. Through her professional and post-retirement years she enjoyed membership in the Business and Professional Women, Alpha Delta Kappa, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Daughters of the American Colonists. Following retirement, she volunteered several years in the gift shop at Union Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center). While her eyesight was good, she enjoyed cooking and was known especially for her fried chicken, country style steak, salted peanut cookies, and pound cake. Additionally, being a natural seamstress, she enjoyed making outfits for her children and grandchildren when they were little. Upon retiring she began knitting classes where the class project was knitting baby caps for newborns at the hospital. This segued into making toboggans for family and friends along with many baby blankets, afghans, and kitchen wash cloths. And having taken several years of piano lessons, she served as pianist and organist at Prospect United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Funeral services for Mrs. Morgan will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Prospect United Methodist Church, 6020 Prospect Road, Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM in the church. Mrs. Morgan is survived by her husband of 62 years, Thomas J. Morgan of Monroe; daughters, Jane M. Nixon, and husband, Rob, of Roanoke Rapids and Anne M. Williams, and husband, Brad, of Cary, five grandchildren, Brandon Williams (Anya), Joanna Nixon, Alex Williams, Sam Nixon, and Addie Nixon, two great-grandchildren, Katya and Leza Williams. The family extends its gratitude to Home Instead Senior Care and especially to Linda Starnes and Treena Lonon for their care during her last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials to be made at Prospect United Methodist Church, 6020 Prospect Road, Monroe, NC 28112 or Union County Public Central Library, 316 E. Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28112. Gordon Funeral Service Crematory is caring for the Morgan family.
