Betty Helms Smith

Betty Octavia Smith, beloved wife of the late Clyde O. Smith, peacefully departed this life to be with her Heavenly Father on January 27, 2025. Born on March 25, 1939, in Union County, she was the cherished daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie (Howie) Helms.

Betty leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her son, John David Fincher and his wife Amy of Monroe, and her treasured grandchildren, Logan Fincher and his wife Hayley, and Becca Ziedman and her husband Daniel of Monroe. Her family tree extends to two great-grandchildren, Emma and Judah, who were the joy of her later years.

She is also lovingly remembered by her stepchildren: Cissy Bowles and her husband Chip of Belmont, Crystal Hawkins and her husband Tom, Curtis Smith and his wife Tracey, and Chuckie Smith of Gastonia. Betty’s passing reunites her in eternity with her husband Clyde and her brothers, George Arthur Helms and Cody Helms, who preceded her in death.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Gordon Funeral Service, located at 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112, Reverend Eddie Price will officiate the service. Friends and loved ones are invited to gather for visitation prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park.

In honor of Betty’s compassionate spirit, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 West Roosevelt Boulevard, Monroe, NC 28110.
