Mrs. Betty Frances Spence, 90, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Union County Hospice House. She was a wonderful Christian servant, beautiful caring wife to her husband, loving and amazing mother and grandmother to her four sons and their families, and a kind and generous friend. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM at Shiloh Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM in the sanctuary. Mrs. Spence was born July 29, 1928 in Mount Holly, Gaston County, NC and was the daughter of the late John Walter and Mary Diana Gamble. She graduated from the Charlotte Memorial Nursing School with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked for many years in Monroe, NC at Union Memorial Hospital in patient care for surgical recovery. Mrs. Spence was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John Wesley Spence, Sr. She is survived by four sons: John Wesley Spence, Jr., wife Theresa of Lumberton, NC, Walter David Spence, wife Patricia of Monroe, Mark O’Brien Spence of Monroe, and Robert Greggory Spence, wife Tammy of Stallings, a sister Nancy Ware of Oak Island, nine grandchildren: Wes Spence, Nicole Spence, Fran Mullins, Stephen Spence, Patrick Spence, Elizabeth Spence, Robert Spence, Erika Spence, and Abby Finley, seven great-grandchildren: Eli Spence, Eamon Spence, Trevor Mullins, Ben Mullins, Lucas Spence, Dylan Spence, and Graham Spence. The family suggests memorials be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 2301 N. Rock River Road, Monroe, NC 28110 or to Union County Hospice, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.
