Beverly Clontz Carnes passed away Saturday, May 11 after a period of declining health. She was born on July 5, 1932, to Theron and Ona Lee Clontz and grew up in the Unionville area.
Following her graduation from the Mercy School of Nursing in 1953, she worked in several hospitals in the Carolinas and Georgia while her husband served in the USAF. In the 1960s, they returned to Union County and built a home on her grandparents’ farm where she resided the rest of her life. After returning to Monroe, she worked at Union Memorial Hospital (Atrium Health Union) and the Smith Building, a predecessor of the Jesse Helms Health Center. She left a rich legacy in the many patients’ and coworkers’ lives she touched during her nursing career.
Family was of utmost importance to her. Besides her parents, she had four siblings: Florine Crooke, David Clontz, Julia Hinson, and Mary Alice Blackmon whom she loved dearly. Her parents and sisters predeceased her. She was also predeceased by her husband, Jerry Carnes (2008), and her son, John Carnes (2024).
She is survived by her daughters, Karen Holt (Kenneth) and Laura Nettles (Jason), and her daughter-in-law, Donelle Carnes. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. She leaves behind Jacob Carnes, Ethan Nettles, Zane Nettles, Madelyn Nettles, and Rachel Carnes, all of whom adored their Granny. Her brother, David Clontz (Audrey) also survives her, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
