Billy “Waymon” Cook, Sr., age 75, died Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at McWhorter House – Hospice of Union County. He was born in Union County, NC on September 21, 1938. He was the son of the late Cam Turner Cook and Avis Morris Cook. He was a lifelong member of Prospect United Methodist Church, graduated from Prospect High School, and received further education from Piedmont Community College and Rowan Technical Institute. He was retired from Oro Manufacturing Company in Monroe. He served four years in the U.S. Army Reserves and was a member of Monroe Lodge No. 244, A.F. and A.M., and a former District President for the N. C. Moose Association. For many years, he served as a volunteer fireman with Sandy Ridge V.F.D. He is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Barbara Helms Cook of the home; and two sons of Monroe, Billy Waymon Cook, Jr. and his wife Julie Griffin Cook and Bryan Ethan Cook. Treasured grandchildren are Collin E. Cook, Katherine C. Cook, Taylor M. Cook, Lucas R. Cook; step-grandchildren, Tiffanie Phifer, Jeremy Laney and Emily Laney; a brother, Ray T. Cook and his wife Violet Tyson Cook and a sister, Jane McWhorter, all of Monroe. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Aycoth; brothers-in-law, Robert D. Aycoth and William O. McWhorter; and a nephew, Jeffery Dale Richardson. The family will receive friends at Prospect United Methodist Church prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014. A celebration of life for Mr. Cook will be held at Prospect United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Steve Phillippi on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Union County for their care and compassion.
