Braxton Dewey Iii Helms

Braxton Dewey Helms, III, 69, of Monroe passed away on March 11, 2015, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Dewey was born July 20, 1945 in Union County to the late Braxton Dewey Helms, Jr. and Jewell Starnes Helms. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathy Cox Helms, his son, Brian Helms and wife Kristy, his daughter, Alison Lyons and husband Matt; 6 grandchildren, Savannah Helms Gramza and husband Chris, Taylor Helms, Anthony Deese, Cecily Deese, Avery Deese, Braxton Lyons; 1 great grandson, Michael Gramza; brother, Johnny Helms; 2 nieces. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters of 47 years, Katherine Cox, Clinton and Collen Cox, Kenneth and Faye Cox, Jean C. Meacham, Jane C. and Charles Greene, Jimmy and Sue Cox, Bobby and Ruth Cox, Marion and Delano Cox, Carolyn C. and Tommy Moore, David and Sheila Cox; 29 nieces and nephews and 55 great nieces and nephews and many great great nieces and nephews. Mr. Helms was a long time member of Altan Presbyterian Church, serving as a session member and on other committees. He graduated from Parkwood High School in 1963 and has maintained a close relationship with many of his classmates. He served proudly in the Army National Guard from 1963 until 1969. He retired from Allvac in 2008 and until his illness enjoyed weekly golf games with the Over the Hill Golf Group and also his ministry of music weekly at nursing homes with two of his friends. Graveside services will be held Sunday, March 15, 2015 at 2:30 PM at Lakeland Memorial Park.
