Brent Edmond Mullis (66) of Monroe, died at home on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Brent was born on November 16, 1957, in Charlotte, NC, the oldest child of Ralph Wilson Mullis and Virginia Dare Smith Mullis.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kathy Lynn Grimes Mullis, and his three dear and beloved children, Elijah Wilson Mullis of Seattle, Washington; Shelby Elizabeth Mullis Moretz (W.J.) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Allison LeAnne Mullis of Monroe, and one grandson, James Wilson Moretz all of whom he was so proud and loved so fiercely. He is also survived by one sister, Elizabeth (Beth) D. Mullis of Monroe, and three aunts; Doris S. Preslar of Monroe, Vivian S. Price of Concord, and Hazel Smith of Fort Mill, South Carolina, along with numerous cousins, including Vic Thomas and J.B. Preslar both of Monroe, the three of them had grown up together and were like brothers all their lives.
Brent was a master craftsman as a gunsmith. His work had been published in the “American Hand Gunner” magazine and was sought out by many serious hunters and shooters of national repute, as well as local hunting and shooting enthusiasts. He was a past 1000-yard National Bench Rest Shooting Champion from 1997 to 1998 and also taught a firearm safety course for a couple seasons.
He was a 1976 graduate of Piedmont High School in Monroe and attended Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Brent worked at Celanese for fourteen years and Philip Morris seven years in past years.
Most recently, Brent had dealt with some very intense medical issues and had fought the good fight against multiple myeloma for several years, with great dignity and success. He seldom complained, just listened to his doctors, and kept a good attitude about his circumstances, which served him well in his battle. He was able to survive his condition for nearly four years, which gave him time to meet his grandson, James, who was truly the apple of his eye.
Those who know Brent well know that he was fiercely intelligent and very well-read on subjects that interested him. He was full of energy and was always either wide open or fast asleep - there was no middle speed for him!
Brent was the sort of fellow who never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him and by all those whose lives he touched.
