Obituary

Carolyn Dosher Gerding Price, age 91, left this world on March 10, 2026, while a resident of Atrium Health Center in Monroe, NC.

Carolyn was born on September 1, 1934, in Southport, NC, the first child of Bryan and Woodrow Dosher. She grew up during the Depression and World War II in Southport and other small, southeastern North Carolina towns where her father, a Baptist minister, pastored congregations. After high school, she attended Wingate Junior College, graduating in 1955. She completed a B.A. in English at Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, TN, in 1957. A few years after graduation she returned to Wingate College to teach English and serve as Dean of Women. She soon met George Gerding, the Dean of Men and Director of Grounds and Maintenance. They married in 1962 and had a happy life in Wingate with Carolyn staying home to raise their children Melody and Glenn. George served as Mayor of Wingate for many years before he died in 1986 after a short battle with cancer.

Carolyn met Hugh Price of Southport, NC, in 1995. They married in 1996 and Carolyn moved to Southport. She and Hugh enjoyed their retirement years together as she was back home where she lived as a child. Hugh died in 2015, and Carolyn moved to Monroe to be close to family and friends.

Carolyn loved her family dearly, always encouraging them to do things in life she never had the opportunity to do. She was strong in her faith, living her life for God and believing in life after death. She will be remembered for her quiet politeness and kindness to others.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, her sister Ann Pope, her brother Clive Dosher, and two infant siblings. She is survived by her daughter Melody Millsaps (Kent) of Monroe, her son Glenn Gerding (Alethea) of Chapel Hill, two grandsons Graham and Jackson Gerding, and her sister Paulette Brown.

Carolyn’s family would like to thank the caregivers at Atrium Health for their excellent professional care of our mother over the past several years. They maintained and improved her quality of life in her last years. They provided friendly companionship and she never felt alone. We always knew she was in good hands.
