Carolyn Elizabeth Slawter Smith age 95, died on Sunday morning, March 20, 2016 at Union Park where she had resided since November 2006. Mrs. Smith was born April 25, 1920 in King, N.C., the fourth child and only daughter of Jerry Pinckney Slawter and Susan Caroline Taylor Slawter. On May 5, 1942, she married Percy Madison Smith as Percy was headed off to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Soon after Percy’s discharge in 1945, the couple settled in Monroe, where they happily lived until Percy's death in October, 2003. Carolyn worked for many years as a buyer and sales associate at Belk Department Store in Monroe, from which she retired. She enjoyed traveling and loved visiting with her extended family. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Monroe. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her five brothers. Among many friends, she was blessed to have two exceptional friends who gave so much to make Carolyn's later years pleasant and comfortable. Doris Ramsey and Betty Uruiez were always there for her. Also, the staff at Union Park loved her and made her feel at home. She is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, all of whom loved their Aunt Carolyn and found her to be quite a special lady. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gordon Funeral Service Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112 with her pastor from First Baptist Church, Dr. Chris Dawson, officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park Cemetery next to her late husband.
