Martha Catherine Chaney Cox, Age 97, of Monroe, passed away at the home of her daughter on Sunday, June 23, 2024, while under hospice care for cancer. She was born on November 23, 1926, in Union County, daughter to the late Zeb M. Chaney and Lela Helms Chaney.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband James Morris Cox, sisters, Hallie Chaney Smith Benton and Ollie Chaney Perry; and brothers Charles Chaney, and Marvin Chaney.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Reynolds (Dennis) of Monroe, granddaughter Ashley Reynolds (partner Jeremiah Ray) of Mint Hill, grandson David Reynolds of Charlotte (fiance Lorraine Keah), sister-in-law Joyce Greene of Monroe, and many nieces and nephews.
Catherine was a 1943 graduate of Wingate High School and completed a year of General Business Studies at Wingate Junior College. In the Spring of 1944, she applied for a job at Union Electric Membership Co-op and was hired as the General Secretary. Soon after that, she was introduced to Morris, who was working next door at FCX (now Southern States). He asked her out to lunch, and Catherine soon decided that he was the one for her! They were wed in the fall of 1948. She worked at Union Electric for 54 years before retiring.
Catherine loved spending time with her family and friends and either gardening or working in her yard. She was a go-getter, feisty lady who her family lovingly nicknamed the Energizer Bunny, because she just kept going. After Morris's death, she was able to live independently at home up until her last year with the support of her "village" of family and friends, including Carol and Joyce Greene, Leroy Morton (deceased), Harold Hildreth, Colleen Newbert, Richie Nash, Joey Cox, Donna Presson, Johnny Mangum, and Byron Laney.
The family would like to express their heart-felt thanks to Dr. Gregory M. Brouse and Dr. Vipul V. Thakkar of the Levine Cancer Institute in Monroe for their top-notch, caring treatment.
Also, thanks to the extraordinary staff at Hospice of Union County: Elsy Solis-Rivera, RN, Robert "Bob" Jessen, RN, Brittany Frazier, RN, Eunice Rodeffer, Social Worker, and Dakeia Harrington, Home Health Aide. We could not have made this journey without their loving care.
Catherine was a member of Rocky River True Light Church of Christ.
