Charles Winford Holtzclaw

February 4, 1927 — November 22, 2020

Dr. Charles Winford Holtzclaw, known by his friends as Wint, of Monroe, N.C. and formerly of Charlotte, N.C. peacefully passed away on November 22, 2020. One of seven children, Dr. Holtzclaw was born on February 4, 1927, to the late Grover Bascom and Ola Myrtle Benfield Holtzclaw. In addition to his parents, Dr. Holtzclaw was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia Callahan, Helen Fisher, Pauline Bartlett and Madeline Weinhold and two brothers, Grover B. Holtzclaw Jr. and Richard LeGrande Holtzclaw. Due to limiting numbers in the church sanctuary, a private family only funeral service will be held at 3:00PM, Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Central United Methodist Church. Burial will be open to the public and take place at Lakeland Memorial park immediately following the service, at approximately 3:45PM. During these times of limiting the numbers for social gatherings, the Holtzclaw Family respects your concerns of avoiding crowds, so they welcome you to stop by Gordon Funeral Service from 10:00AM until 4:00PM on Friday, November 27, 2020 to pay your respects to avoid crowds. A member of the "Greatest Generation" and WII Veteran, Wint enlisted in the United States Army in November, 1946. He became three stripe Sergeant and received an honorable discharge in November of 1949. When his commanding officer heard Wint's music, Wint was asked to form a band to entertain the soldiers and boost morale. He was honored to have participated in the "Flight of Honor" several years ago. After graduating from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, Wint started a private practice and served the public for over 50 years. He was President of the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Union Electric Cooperative. Wint was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Monroe, N.C. His family and close friends knew him best at the piano, where all would gather to sing and listen. His God given talent made him the light in the room while he played. The last musical piece written by Wint was "Let Him In", in a fervent hope of bringing people to Christ. His dream was that one-day Charles Stanley Ministries might play the piece in his tv ministry. Wint was an ardent follower of his Lord Jesus Christ, reading and studying scripture daily. Dr. Holtzclaw is survived by his wife Mary Lou Brock Holtzclaw, and three children son Charles Winford Holtzclaw, Jr. (Paula), and daughters Carol Denise Holtzclaw and Lou Anne Holtzclaw McBride (Roy). He was grandfather to six grandchildren, Charles Grover Holtzclaw (Paula), Sara Belle Harper (Kyle), Foreste Marie Hess, Winford Brock Holtzclaw (Sophia), Samara Li Jing McBride and Elijah Jian Xi McBride.
