Chloe (Lathan) Phillips

December 30, 1923 — April 4, 2018

Chloe Lathan Phillips, 94, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018. She was born in Union County, NC on December 30, 1923 daughter of the late L. Clyde Lathan and Eunice Broome Lathan. Mrs. Phillips retired as Vice President of United Carolina Bank (now BBT) after 41 years of service. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Road Waxhaw, NC 28173 with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday, April 6, 2018 from 5:00 until 7:00 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Chloe was a lifelong member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and very active in the United Methodist Women organization serving in various positions including Chairperson of the council on Ministries, President of the Bethlehem UMW, and was honored with a Life Membership in the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was also the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Finance of Bethlehem Church. She has also served as trustee, Vice-President, and President of the Albemarle District UMW. Mrs. Phillips was initiated in Eastern Star Monroe Chapter 113, with her husband Harold in 1950. She served in multiple offices for the local chapter including Worthy Matron multiple times. In 1972 she was honored with a Life Membership. She was also active on the state level holding various appointed offices and served as Worthy Grand Matron for the State of NC. Mrs. Phillips was also active in the Business and Professional Womens Club where she served as President and received the club Woman of the Year award. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Phillips is survived by her sisters, Helen L. Faires of Charlotte, and Joyce L. Woodhouse of Raleigh, son, Gary H. Phillips and wife Angie of Raleigh, grandson Grant H Phillips of Atlanta, and granddaughter Juliana P Noble and husband Alex of Charlotte, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, G. Harold Phillips, daughter, Donna Lynn Phillips, sister Carol McManus, brother, L.C. Lathan and a niece Dayle Shipp. Memorials may be directed to the Building Fund or Pre-School Scholarship of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 5300 Nesbit Rd., Waxhaw, NC 28173.
