Christine (Smith) Helms

Christine S. Helms, 89, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015. She was born on July 10, 1925, in Union County, NC, the daughter of the late Mark L. Smith and Bessie Gurley Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren G. Helms in 2009. Mrs. Helms was member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Monroe, NC. She is survived by her daughter, Penny Helms Cochrane and husband, Paul M. (Mac) Cochrane, II, grandsons, Bradley and Daniel Cochrane, of Indian Trail, NC, one granddaughter, Lauren B. Grismer and husband, Jeremiah, and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Grismer, of Monroe, NC. She is also survived by two sisters, Becky S. Handsel and Jessie S. Purnell, both of Monroe, NC. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 19, 2015, at 2:00 pm in the Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Gordon Funeral Service prior to the service between 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm. Memorials may be made to The Arc of Union County, 1653-C Campus Park Drive, Monroe, NC, 28112, to the attention of Melinda Plue, to specifically support children with autism within our community.
