Clarence Wayne Shadrick, 85, of Wingate, North Carolina, peacefully passed away at his home on March 26, 2025. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of 10. He was a member of Community Church of Monroe for nearly 40 years and delighted in hosting and attending many small group Bible studies.
Wayne was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on September 22, 1939, to Raymond Clarence Shadrick and Annie Louise Vaden Shadrick, and was educated at Salisbury High School, Catawba College and UNC-Chapel Hill. He then went on to teach and coach at the high school and college levels.
Also known as “coach,” he enjoyed all sports. His favorite sport to play and coach was basketball. In 1995, Wayne started the “Walk with Wayne” program after having quadruple bypass surgery. He inspired a healthy lifestyle to many people making friends wherever he went. Wayne enjoyed playing his guitar, listening to Bluegrass Music in numerous places, selling cars, and lending a helping hand.
He is survived by his wife Julia and daughters Amy Davis (Everett), Laura Purvis (Shane), Julie Merrell (Randy) and Sarah Broadway (Chad), all of Union County. He was a beloved “PawPaw” to his grandchildren: Josh Davis (Jill), Camden Davis, Reagan Purvis, Cason Purvis, Atlas Broadway, Vaden Broadway, and Charleigh Broadway. He is also survived by his sister Brenda Holder (Jerry) of Salisbury, North Carolina, beloved cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Gordon Funeral Service, with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service and Crematory,1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112.
