Clyde (Mcgrady) Dickens

January 4, 1918 — October 19, 2014

Clyde Dickens, 96, passed away peacefully at her home on October 19, 2014 surrounded by family. She was born on January 4th , 1918 in Hillsville, Virginia to Delmon and Princess McGrady. She was the 4th of 8 children. Clyde is survived by her husband of 72 years, Walter Dickens. She is also survived by three chidren, Brenda Britt and husband Gary of Gastonia, Richard Dickens and wife Emily of Oak Ridge and Sarah Hemby and husband Tim of Wesley Chapel. She loved her family and took joy in spending time with her 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 1 sister and survived by 2 sisters and one brother all of Virginia. Clyde was a very caring and nurturing woman that always took care of everyone in the family. She was the best mother in the world. She was a hard worker that rarely sat down to rest unless it was to watch a Carolina basketball game or a Braves baseball game. She was into sustainability before it became a buzzword. Nothing went to waste if she could find a use for it. She was known for being constantly on the move either making food for family or for ailing friends that she and her husband, Walter, would visit on a regular basis. Clyde was a great cook and her grandchildren all have a favorite dish that only she could make. If she wasn’t found in her kitchen, she could be found outside hanging clothes on the clothesline or working in the garden. Clyde was ready to get together anytime anywhere with family whether it was to eat, converse, or play games. She was a member of and actively involved at Shiloh Baptist Church where she served as church clerk for many years. Her sweet smile, humble presence and gracious manner are many of the qualities friends and family used to describe her. She had a deep trust in the Lord that gave her strength and encouragement to endure her declining health with grace and dignity. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Clyde Dickens, officiated by Rev. Ron Hanna, will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at 2:00pm at Shiloh Baptist Church in Monroe, NC. Her family will receive friends in the Shiloh Baptist Family Life Center preceding the funeral at 1:00pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Shiloh Baptist Church or Hospice of Union County. Arrangements for the Dickens family are in the care of Gordon Funeral Home.
