Colene Belk

October 1, 1929 — October 11, 2019

Mrs. Colene Griffin Belk, 90, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2019. She was born October 1, 1929 in Union County and attended Indian Trail School. Colene worked at the Oasis Soda Shop in downtown Monroe before joining DelMar Photography in Matthews, NC, where she worked for 34 years. A strong Christian, Colene was a member of Benton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church and particularly enjoyed participating in the church’s annual barbeque. To know Colene was to know a sweet lady who was strong-willed, hard-working, loyal and humble. She always selflessly cared for and loved her family and will be remembered as a wonderful cook, especially for her chicken and dumplings, biscuits and chocolate cake. Colene was married to Bruce Craven Belk for 67 years until he passed in 2014. She is survived by her children, Beverly Haigler Daly and husband, Pete of Matthews, and Randy Bruce Belk and wife, Karen of Indian Trail. She is also survived by her three grandchildren: Alicia Haigler Smith and husband, Jay of Cary, Aaron Lane Haigler and wife, Tonya of Rocky Mount, Virginia; and Whitney Katherine Belk of Indian Trial, and one step-grandson Patrick Daly of Huntersville. Colene also has five great-grandchildren: Rachel and Tavia Smith, and Ashlynn, Aimslee and Tipton Haigler. She is also survived by two sisters: Ruth Griffin Wallace of Fuquay Varnina and Mildred Griffin Marze of Waxhaw. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 13, 2019 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Gordon Funeral Service and Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. A service to celebrate Colene’s life will be held at 11:00am on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Benton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church, 109 East Lawyers Road, Monroe, NC 28110. An interment service will immediately follow at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Hillcrest Baptist Church Rest Home for providing outstanding care and support to Colene for more than three years. They also recognize the gentle care Colene received from Hospice of Union County during her final days. The family greatly appreciates the outpouring of sympathy and love they’ve received and ask that donations in lieu of flowers be made in Colene’s memory to Hillcrest Baptist Church Rest Home at 4123 Hillcrest Church Road, Monroe, NC 28110.
