Dennis Wade Funderburk, 72, of Monroe, NC passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023. He was born in Monroe, NC on June 27, 1950, son to the late Hoyt Carson Funderburk and Susie Doster Funderburk. He is also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law J.C. and Lennie Loyd, sister Elsie Ruth Rorie and two brothers-in-law, Jerry Rorie; Jack Helms.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Wolf Pond Baptist Church,
with burial to follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors.
Dennis grew up on a small farm in the Wolf Pond community of Chesterfield, South Carolina. He attended Central High School where he played football and graduated in 1968. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War as a member of the 82nd Airborne and was extremely proud to have been able to serve and defend the country he loved so much. He was a life-long member of Wolf Pond Baptist Church where he came to know his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Dennis served as a deacon, RA leader, on numerous committees, and served in any role where he was needed. He loved to sing and was proud to be a Wolf Pond Choir member. Dennis was the epitome of a servant leader. He loved to help and serve not only the members of his church but anyone that was in need. He went on several church mission trips and also worked for many years with the Chesterfield Baptist Missions Outreach. He never met a stranger and loved to serve people in any way that he could. Dennis was a friend to everyone that he met. He had a warm smile, a huge heart and he always wanted everyone to feel loved and a part of whatever he was doing.
Dennis was a fierce friend, a loyal and loving husband and the best father and grandfather that you could ask for. He would take every chance he got to tell you all about his wife Johnnie and how much he loved and appreciated her. He loved to talk about how proud he was of all four of his children, because Daddy would tell you that Stephanie and Brett were his just like Kevin and Kristi. He would absolutely glow every time he talked about his precious grandchildren. He loved each one of them with a love that words can’t even describe. He was present for every game, recital, play, shooting practice, competition, and anything else they participated in. He will be missed beyond words.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Johnnie Loyd Funderburk, son Kevin Funderburk (Stephanie), daughter Kristi Goins (Brett), brother Ronnie Funderburk (Anita), sister Mary Jo Wallace (Calvin), grandchildren, Elijah Funderburk (Kassidy Whitenight), Caleb Funderburk, Emma Goins, Owen Goins, three sisters-in-law, Betty Helms; Brenda Bass (John); Wanda Laton (Richard); as well as many nieces and nephews.
