Dewey Alan Plyler (Al), 59, died just after midnight on Thursday, March 24, 2017 at CHS-Union surrounded by his entire family. Al was born on November 18, 1957 to Aaron W. Plyler and Dorothy M. Plyler. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe and a graduate of Wingate College and Appalachian State University. Services to celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, March 28 at 2:00 pm at Benton Heights Presbyterian Church. Visitation will precede the service from 12:30 - 1:45 pm. Conducting the services will be Rev. Dr. Brent Johnston and Rev. Paul Saleeby. After graduating college, Plyler began a diverse career in sales and community relations. He was previously employed by the NC Dept. of Commerce but his true passion was being self-employed and an independent contractor. His love for the beach, lake, boating and anything on the water brought him the greatest pleasure and joy in life. As his sons described him, “He just loved living. Living life was his hobby.” Al was preceded in death by his father, Senator Aaron W. Plyler, in August, 2016. He is survived by his sons Alan Plyler, Jr., Brad Plyler and William Plyler. Also surviving are his mother, Dot Plyler, sisters Barbara Plyler Faulk, Diane Plyler Hough, brothers Aaron Plyler Jr. and Alton Plyler. Al is also survived by his special friend, Teresa London. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Buddy Broome, Troy Fuchs, Phil Rains, Fo Roldan, Zane Sowell and Clint Tucker.
