Don Phillip Duncan

December 30, 1934 — March 12, 2024

Don Phillip Duncan, 89, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024.


The family will receive friends and family on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 12:30pm-1:45pm in the sanctuary at Midway Baptist Church, 4615 Olive Branch Road, Wingate NC.


The funeral service will be in the Midway Baptist Church sanctuary at 2:00pm. The burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe NC.

Don was born on December 30, 1934, in Fairview NC to the late Earl and Myrtle Duncan. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Katie, and their children Phil Duncan (Lana) and Leigh Ann Coats (Tracy).


Don is preceded in death by his brother, Bob Duncan, and is survived by Jim Duncan of Fairview, NC, and Doug Duncan of Daniel Island, SC.


He was a cherished grandfather to his grandchildren, Stephanie Crysel (Scott), Lauren Coats, Ryan Smith (Kamilia), and Randy Smith (Rachel), and great-grandchildren Elliott, Evelyn, Cooper, Charleston, Duncan, Clancy, Benjimen, and Zelia.


Don was a dedicated employee of the City of Salisbury, NC, and the City of Albemarle, NC, where he served with distinction for many years, including President of the NC Water Works Association, and was selected “Water Works Operator of the Year” multiple times. He was also involved in various community activities, including the Lions Club for 30 years.


A member of both the First Baptist Church of Salisbury NC and Midway Baptist Church in Wingate NC, Don served as a deacon, exemplifying his commitment to his faith and community.


Don graduated from Fairview High School in 1953. He was known as the “Big Bear” and loved basketball. Don attended Wingate College where he met his future wife, Katie Lee Griffin. He finished his education at Appalachian with a BS in Chemistry and Biology.


Don also served his country in the National Guard for 10 years. Outside of work and service, he enjoyed camping and spending time at the coast and in the mountains, and creating cherished memories with his family and friends.
