Donald Douglas Duncan, 70, of Waxhaw, NC, formerly of Charlotte died while snorkeling in Costa Maya, Mexico on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. He was born on November 27, 1947 in Gaffney, SC. He was the son of Donald Douglas Duncan, Sr. and Ethel Muir Duncan. The family will receive friends at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112, Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 6-8PM. Funeral services will be at Tirzah Presbyterian Church, 7507 Tirzah Church Road, Waxhaw, NC on Friday, August 24, 2018 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jill Duffield of Charlottesville, VA officiating. Donald graduated from East Mecklenburg High School, class of 1966. He earned an Associate of Electrical Engineering from CPCC in Charlotte, NC. Donald served in the US Navy on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga in the North China Sea during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked for Duke Energy at the Catawba Nuclear Plant from construction until his retirement in 2013. Donald was an active member of Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw, NC. He loved kayaking, canoeing, snorkeling, camping, riding motor cycles, cruising and dressing in his tuxedo for formal nights. He was truly a renaissance man. He could repair anything. He loved poetry, literature and the ballet. He wasn’t fond of the opera, but endured it for his wife. Donald was predeceased by his father Donald D. Duncan, Jr. and brother Kenneth A. Duncan He is survived by his wife Janis Godwin Duncan, stepson Nelson (Mary Randolph) Ridley, IV, and stepdaughter Janna M. Ridley. There are five surviving grandchildren; Chazmin Brown, Elijah Brown, Sebastian Ridley, Mary-Etta Ridley, and Eloise Ridley. His other survivors include His mother Ethel M. Duncan of Durham, one brother Malcolm (Sandra) Duncan; two sisters, Margaret Duncan-Brown (Patrick Brown) and Sandra (Henry) Rider. He is also survived by two sister-in- laws; Rebecca (Phillip) Ramirez, Jennifer (Danny) Pagan and two brother-in-laws; Joseph (Diane) Godwin and Timothy (Darla) Godwin; mother-in-law, Barbara Godwin. Donald is also survived by nephews; Chris Duncan, Jeremy Duncan, Cameron Brown, Andrew Godwin, Ben Godwin, Julian Pagan, Eric Pagan and nieces; Sarah Rider, Shannon Brown, Jessica Godwin, Fiona Ramirez, Bella Ramirez, and Celeste Godwin.
