Donald Eugene Fly

Donald “Don” Eugene Fly, 88, passed away Monday, June 4, 2018. He was born in Huntington, WV on April 26, 1930, son of the late Thomas Jesse and Gertha Gladys Young Fly. Mr. Fly was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Simpson Fly of 43 years, brothers, James Hayward, Thomas Glenn, Edward Leroy and Richard Nelson and sisters, Kathleen Rice Smith and Audra Fly Reger. Don graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1947. After graduating from Navigation School, he served as an aerial navigator. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1953. He earned an Associate in Arts degree from Thomas A. Edison College of New Jersey in 1979 and also a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of the State of New York in 1998. He retired from General Motors Corporation. He was a Hospice Volunteer Meals On Wheels driver for thirteen years. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will visit with friends and relatives on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC. Mr. Fly is survived by his son, Thomas Owen Fly and wife Sandra of Charlotte; daughters, Janet Fly Helms of Indian Trail, Catherine Fly Andrews of Waxhaw and Linda Fly Powell of Mineral Springs; sisters, Dorothy Rutledge of Clemmons, NC and Wanda Wentz of Monroe; brother, David Fly and wife Samantha of Lynchburg, TN; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
