Donald Rhodes

Donald Kane Rhodes, 84, of Marshville, NC, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2025, surrounded by family and loved ones.


Born on January 16, 1941, in Belmont, NC, Donald was the beloved son of the late Donald and Pauline Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tamara Hicks Rhodes and sister, Lynn Rhodes Knight. He is survived by his brother, Colin Rhodes, and his wife, Patty.


Donald was a man of deep faith who loved the Lord. His relationship with God guided him through all aspects of his life. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and lived a life full of adventure, skill, and independence. He was a man of many talents, known for his ability to fix anything. Whether it was a leaky pipe, a broken engine, or a project needing expert hands, he was always the one family and friends turned to. His problem-solving skills and resourcefulness were unmatched. He was also a skilled airplane pilot and mechanic, with a deep love for aviation and the mechanics behind it. Flying gave him a sense of freedom and adventure that he cherished.


Donald had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. He loved to fish, spending peaceful days by the water. He loved to hunt, embracing the quiet beauty of nature. He loved to ride motorcycles, feeling the thrill of the open road. And he enjoyed playing golf, spending countless hours on the course enjoying the game. These passions brought him joy and unforgettable experiences.


He is survived by his children: Mike Rhodes and wife Myra, Julie Reel and husband Barry, Kerry Holtel and husband Mike, Mark Rhodes and wife Eve, and Dondriah "Doolie" Holland and husband Bill. His legacy continues through his 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.


The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Gentiva Hospice and Brandi Queen at Community Medical for their compassion and care in Donald’s final days. Special thanks to Kim Blount for her loving and dedicated caregiving, and to TJ and Zina Bivens, along with Emerson and Brittany Bivens, for their kindness, support, and the many meals they so generously prepared.


A special thank you to Bill and Doolie Holland for their years of compassionate caregiving, and for the countless days and nights they spent caring for Donald, offering their love, support, and devotion.


Donald’s life was a testament to strength, resilience, faith, and independence. He will be remembered in the hearts of those who knew him.


A private funeral service will be held at the cemetery at a later date.
