Elsie Broom Lee died peacefully in her home on Wednesday morning, April 23, 2014 with family and friends. Her parents Mary Price and Ward Broom were blessed with Elsie and her brother Phillip, who died during the Vietnam War. Elsie was married to the love of her life, Robert E. Lee, for 25 years. Elsie enjoyed life, lunches with everyone at Rolling Hills, and laughter with her husband until his untimely death in 1981. They are survived by two children: Brad and Cathy Lee. Cathy’s oldest son, “Little” Robert (Robert Lee Craig) was more than special to Elsie. Robert ensured her last years were fun while providing the upmost care for her. Cathy and her husband, Mike Mangum, have three children, Catherine, Phillip, and Myca as well as Elsie’s only great-granddaughter Leah Rea Melton (Catherine’s daughter). Brad is married to Patty and they have three daughters: Christina, Victoria, and Alexandra. Elsie is also survived by her nephews, Tom and Ward Hammock of Little River, SC. Elsie was born on March 4, 1933 and is a Monroe native who always loved her Monroe home. She graduated from Monroe High School and UNC. Tarheel “wins” were most important and exciting for Elsie. Her granddaughter Victoria will graduate from UNC in the spring and granddaughter Alexandra will be a freshman in the fall. Elsie will be in Carolina Blue Heaven knowing that these granddaughters will continue to cheer for the “blue team” in her absence. Elsie was an active member of the Central United Methodist Church. If you knew Elsie before her stroke five years ago you know that she was always active. She was constantly in motion and enjoyed the company of her dear friend Bill Wright as they cheered on the “Big Blue” and visited family and friends at the beach in her later years. It was hard to keep her down even though her physical difficulties increased. Services will be held at the chapel of Central United Methodist Church in Monroe at 12:00 pm on Saturday April 26th and a Celebration of Life at her home of 81 years - 1313 Griffith Rd following the service. Donations may be made to Hospice of your choice and Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, NC 28112. Gordon Funeral Service Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC is caring for the Lee family. Online condolences may be made at www.gordonfuneralservice.com
