Dorothy Langdon King, 88, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 in Monroe, NC. Fr. Lucien Longtin, SJ, nephew of Mrs. King, will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial, followed by interment in the Belmont Abbey Cemetery, on Monday, March 19, 1:30 pm at Belmont Abbey Basilica, Belmont, NC. Following the interment, friends are invited to join the family for a reception in the Belmont Abbey Commons. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, at Gordon Funeral Service in Monroe, NC, preceded by a Rosary service from 2:45 to 3:00 pm. Dorothy Rebecca Langdon was born in Fayetteville, NC on November 8, 1923, daughter of the late William Lester and Sallie Williams Langdon. She and the late Peter John King were married in Philadelphia, PA, in 1947. Dot was a graduate of Salem College. While attending Temple University, she also worked as a research chemist at DuPont in Philadelphia, PA and succeeded in having three patents recorded. She attended the Cortizoz School of Dance and performed in the 1947 and 1948 Cultural Olympics. She later earned advanced degrees in education, counseling, and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and was a member of Mensa. After moving from Philadelphia to Monroe in 1949, her family was among the first members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. For many years, she provided service to the church, playing the organ, and later serving as a lay minister and teaching the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults. Mrs. King retired from the Monroe City School System after working from 1965 to 1990 as a teacher, guidance counselor and school psychologist. She was a founding member and served on the board of Turning Point of Monroe, dedicated to aiding members of domestic violence. She was an Oblate of the Order of St. Benedict and a Cursillista. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. King was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, god-mother, and friend. Dot was preceded in death by her husband, Peter John King, Jr. She is survived by her children, Eileen Evans (Bob), Catherine McIlvaine, Dr. Rebecca King (Roy Piscitello), Carolyn Carroll (Arnie), Kevin King (Marina Mooney), Brian King (Susan) and Julia Lopez (Mike); and two sisters, Phyllis Gill and Sara Clinard (Hubert). She is survived by seven grandchildren: Robert Evans (Janice Huang), Christine Rosinski (Bobby), Joseph Piscitello, Caroline Keigher, Sallie Piscitello, Michael Lopez, and Jonathan Lopez. She also has two great-grandchildren, Clyde Evans and Langdon Rosinski.
