Dorothy Gordon Laney

April 11, 1926 — March 19, 2022

Dorothy Gordon Laney, 95, of Monroe, NC passed away on March 19, 2022. Dorothy was the only daughter of the late Craven and Judith Laney Gordon of Monroe. She was the granddaughter of two prominent citizens of old Monroe, Thomas Jackson Gordon and Thurlow Braxton Laney (T.B. Laney).

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Frank Dillon Laney, son of the late J. Walter Laney, Sr. and Wilma Armfield Laney, and also her four brothers, Col. Thomas Gordon, David Gordon, Craven Gordon, Jr., and Jackson Gordon.

Dorothy is survived by her only daughter, Judith Melissa Laney; her granddaughter, Ashley DeLaney Jones, and her husband, Robert Emmett Thomas Jones of Arlington, VA; Jean Gordon Carter, her husband Michael, and family; David Gordon, Jr., his wife Sue Ann, and family; J. Walter Laney, III, his wife Donna, and family; Larry Laney and family; Bill Laney, his wife Pris, and family; Reed Laney, his wife Toni, and family; Monnie Rhett McMillan, her husband Dick, and family; Cindy Lingle Henk, her husband Bill, and family; Lizanne Lingle Oliver, her husband Fred, and family; Wilma Lingle, and her husband Dennis O’Kane; Arnie Lingle, Jr; Emsley Laney and family of Chesterfield, SC; and Tommy Laney and his wife Amy of Wilmington, NC.

Dorothy graduated from Monroe High School in 1943 and went to work as a secretary at Post Engineer, Camp Sutton and worked there until the camp was disbanded. She then went to Washington, DC and worked with the Department of Commerce until the end of World War II. Upon returning to Monroe, she worked at the local Draft Board reacquainting our returning veterans back into civilian life. She worked for Virgil Henderson, Inc. until her marriage to Frank in 1949. Her last job before retirement with American Bank and Trust Company.

Dorothy was an avid reader of British WWII mysteries, loved to dance, and enjoyed visiting her daughter and granddaughter in Virginia. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will truly be missed. She was also a lifetime member of the Central United Methodist Church in Monroe.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM Thursday, March 24, 2022 at Monroe City Cemetery 891 Bickett St. Monroe, NC 28112.
