Dorris Jean McManus Simpson, 76, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Clare Bridge Memory Care Assisted Living in Winston-Salem, NC. Dorris was born on April 3, 1937 to Thomas Adam and Mary Helen Godfrey McManus in Waxhaw, NC. She graduated from Waxhaw High School in 1955 and went on to Southeastern Beauty School and was a hairstylist and small business owner. She married William (Bill) Wilson Simpson on June 7, 1958 and together they owned and operated Dorris’ Hairstyling Salon in Charlotte, NC until their retirement in June 2009. Before her marriage, Dorris was a member of Waxhaw Baptist Church, where she served as a Youth Sunday School Teacher. In 1958, she joined Tirzah Presbyterian Church and served as an Adult Sunday School Teacher and Youth Leader for many years. She enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing, helping those in need, and loved her customers “at the beauty shop”, whom she counted as her dearest friends. Dorris was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill, in June 2009. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Winkler and her husband, David, of Winston-Salem; a son, Mark Simpson, and a brother, Clarence McManus and his wife, Bonnie, of Waxhaw. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Zachary, Cody and Jeanna Winkler of Winston-Salem, whom she dearly loved. The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Tirzah Presbyterian Church in Waxhaw, NC, with burial immediately following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 1:00 - 2:00 pm.
