Douglas (Nisbet) Davis

May 8, 1913 — March 20, 2016

Douglas Nisbet Davis Mrs. Davis, 102, passed away March 20, 2016 at Pruitt Nursing Center. Born in Waxhaw on May 8, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Taylor Phifer Nisbet and beloved wife of the late Daniel Shaw Davis. She will be remembered as a wife, mother, grandmother and sister who loved her family unconditionally. When asked at age 100 to describe her long life, she stated simply, “I have had a beautiful life”. After growing up in Pineville, Douglas enrolled in Queens College. It was during this time she met her husband, Danny. They married October 12, 1935 in Waxhaw and later moved to Monroe where they reared their three children. Even though they never returned to Waxhaw to live, they maintained close ties to this community. Along with their children, and later on, their grandchildren, they visited family there, practically every weekend. In later years, they converted a corn crib into a cabin and spent many happy times at their farm in Waxhaw. Douglas was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. She especially enjoyed being a part of the Joy Circle and through the years was a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor and an active member of the Women of the Church whereupon she received an Honorary Life Membership. Even though Douglas spent most of her married life as a homemaker, she was able to fulfill a desire to work in a medical setting. When her youngest child entered high school, Douglas joined Dr. T. Lane Ormand as a medical assistant in his downtown Monroe medical office. She continued in this role for many years and cherished her relationship with Dr. Ormand and his wife, Sally. Before Douglas’s health declined, she was active in the Daughters of the American Colonists, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Chautauqua Book Club. She treasured her many friends in these organizations. The family would like to thank Dr. A.P. Kitchin for many, many years of medical care provided to Douglas before she had to make the move to a nursing facility. Also, she was blessed to have been cared for by Janice Polk since 1998 and more recently, Joyce McNeeley, Minnie Smith, Pam Polk, Ada McGee and Blondie McCoy. She is survived by her son, Dan Davis and his wife, Jeannette of Charlotte, Dick Davis and his wife, Sylvia of West Yellowstone, Montana and daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Collins (Janie) of Monroe. Also surviving are grandchildren, Shelley Hopkins, Doug Davis, Richard Davis and Molly Baccich, and step grandchildren, Scott and Alex Collins. Great grandchildren, Joseph Hopkins, Anna Hickman, Laura Gray Hopkins, Rebekah Mounts, Sophie Davis and Claire Davis were blessed to have their great grandmother in their lives. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Mrs. Carolyn McLean of Greensboro and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Douglas will be 2:00 pm., March 23, 2016 at The First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall from 1:00 until 1:45 prior to the service. Burial will follow at Southside Cemetery in Waxhaw. Memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church, 302 East Windsor Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
