Following a short, brave battle with cancer, Dr. C. Brian Odom, Faculty Emeritus of Biology, Wingate University, of Wingate, NC passed away on April 9, 2026. A native of Spartanburg County, SC, he was the son of Clifford C. and Laura Ann Belcher Odom who preceded him in death.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Odom authored numerous scholarly papers, delivered many professional presentations, and mentored many undergraduate student researchers, contributing significantly to his field. His most cherished accomplishments, however, were rooted in the classroom. He was especially honored to be the only faculty member at Wingate University to receive both undergraduate teaching honors: the inaugural Debra Marie O’Neal Award for Excellence in Teaching in May 2004 and The Charles and Hazel Corts Award for Excellence in Teaching in May 2012. These recognitions held deep meaning for Dr. Odom, reflecting his genuine love for teaching and his unwavering commitment to his students. Dr. Odom was scholarship personified; he took heed the words of Samuel Johnson, "To talk in public, to think in solitude, to read and to hear, to inquire and answer inquiries, is the business of a scholar."
Dr. Odom is survived by his wife, Amee H. Odom of Wingate, NC; uncle Joe Belcher (Connie) of Columbia SC; cousin Todd Belcher of Inman, SC; mother-in-law Christina B. Huneycutt of Albemarle, NC; and beloved family friend Hannah M. Wall (Thomas) of Oakboro, NC.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to the Wingate University Faculty Emeritus Fund (Wingate University Office of Advancement, Stegall Building, Wingate, NC 28174).
