Will the circle be unbroken? We believe that through the grace and mercy of our Savior, indeed it will. Edith Pauline Green Simpson died Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the age of 101. She was born March 27,1925, in Union County, NC, a daughter of the late Lonnie Wilson and Jane Hinson Green. In addition to her parents and her husband, her four sisters (Polly, Blondell, Myrtle and Jessie) as well as her six brothers (Wriston, Walter, Dub, Bob, Charles and Nat) all preceded her in death. From a young age, Edith learned how to be strong when life was tough and how to be grateful when times were good. Like many others who were part of America’s Greatest Generation, she believed in the importance of rising early, going to work and working hard. Most of Edith’s working years were spent at Kroehler Manufacturing Company in Charlotte where she made many good friends whom she never forgot. While her demeanor was quiet and gentle, her family and friends could attest to her determined spirit, a characteristic which served her well through the years. Having been raised during the Great Depression, saving and frugality were ingrained in her. Yet she was almost always ready for a shopping trip. It didn’t matter if it was to a simple flea market or a fine retail store or anywhere in between. To Edith, makeovers, manicures, nice clothes, new shoes, going out to eat, dressing up and looking sharp equaled fun. She loved listening to bluegrass music, especially bluegrass gospel. She also never underestimated the satisfaction a good cup of coffee can bring. She was always interested in current events locally, nationally and around the world. But her greatest interests always revolved around what her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews were doing. When she celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by many family members and friends, she was asked how she thought she managed to live to be 100. She answered sincerely and simply, “Almighty God.” In 1943 Edith was introduced to Heath Lee Simpson. It wasn’t long until Uncle Sam called for Heath’s service in World War II. Before he left for basic training, Heath asked Edith to wait for his return from the war, and she did. When the war was over the officers Heath had served under convinced him to remain with them in Europe for a little longer, working there. Edith never forgot the day he finally came walking up into the yard at her parents’ house with a big smile on his face and lots of gratitude in his heart. He was changed in some ways by the war, but his deep love for Edith remained steadfast. The two were married on January 18th, 1947. Led by God, they built a wonderful life together and raised a family they loved abundantly. They had been married for 60 years when Heath died in 2007. Edith was a devout Primitive Baptist. Her funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 30, 2026, at Crooked Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 7918 Crooked Creek Church Road, Monroe, NC 28110, the church in which she was raised. Her family will greet friends and relatives from 3:00PM until 3:45PM prior to the service in the church fellowship building. The service will be led by her pastor, Elder Richie Broadway. At her request, two of her grandsons, Reverend Heath Simpson and Reverend Lee Thomas, will assist. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Edith is survived by her daughter Lazette Thomas and husband Eric, her son Tim and wife Bobbie. Grandchildren: Chris Thomas (Amy), Lee Thomas (Amy), Heath E. Simpson (Jody), Jason Simpson (Jessica). Great-Grandchildren: Jacob Thomas, Olivia Thomas, Marina Thomas, Miley Thomas, Amandolyn Simpson, and Cameron Simpson.
