Elizabeth Couick Godfrey, 92, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023. She was born November 2, 1930, in Union County, NC, the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Couick & Pearl Starnes Couick. She is also preceded in death by her husband Roy Lee Godfrey, two brothers; Frankie Couick, and Jim Couick, three sisters; Nancy Lemmond, Shirley Eudy, and Shelia Couick, and a grandson Matthew King.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in Waxhaw Baptist Church (Roundtop), 8213 Old Waxhaw Monroe Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173. She will be laid to rest following the service in the church cemetery next to her late husband Roy Lee Godfrey.
Elizabeth joined Waxhaw Baptist Church in 1946 and over her many years of membership she taught Sunday School for 72 years, she served for many years as the church clerk, and played the piano or organ for 62 years. In addition to playing for her church, she also played the piano for a weekly ministry at an assisted living facility. Elizabeth always had a love for sewing and often made clothes for her family and others, but she especially enjoyed the sewing and the fellowship with the ladies’ church sewing ministry as they made useful items to share with those in need.
As her children were beginning to live their adult lives, Elizabeth returned to college and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree, and then a Master’s Degree. She enjoyed a new career path with the Union County Public School System as a Librarian first at Wingate Elementary, and then at Western Union Elementary where she retired after many years of dedicated employment. She was such an avid storyteller at family gatherings, children’s birthday parties, children visiting the school library, and she in so doing made it a point to share the story of Jesus with all ages. Her years as a librarian and an avid storyteller brought her many years of joy, fulfillment, and precious memories. In addition to storytelling, Elizabeth had an adoring love for plants and gardening, and was a member of a local master gardening club.
Elizabeth is survived by a son, Ronald Godfrey, wife Donna, two daughters; Libby Faulk, husband Woody, and Patti Carter, husband Roger, a brother Jerry Couick, wife Lib, eight grandsons; Ron Godfrey, wife Cristina, Jason Godfrey, wife Mesia, Brian King, Adam King, wife Kayla, Nathan Carter, wife Stacey, Daniel Carter, Johnathan Carter, wife Lyndsey, and Jordan Carter, wife Connie, eleven great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Carol Couick, brother-in-law Floyd Eudy, three step-grandchildren; B.J.
