Florence Patricia (Grant) Trevor

July 1, 1926 — April 15, 2015

Florence Grant Trevor, 88, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015. She was born in Orlando, Florida on July 1, 1926 daughter of the late Leo Washington Grant and Anna Gregory Gufford Grant. She was also preceded in death by her husband George S. Trevor, Jr. Mrs. Trevor graduated from Barnard College and received her MA in education from The University of Tennessee. She was active in the civil rights movement of the 60’s and worked in the Anti-Poverty Program as a Director of the Upward Bound program at Voorhees College, Denmark SC and later Friendship and Winthrop Colleges in Rock Hill, SC. When those programs ended she became director of the Learning Resource Center at York Technical College. She moved to Charlotte and continued in similar work at CPCC for the remainder of her career. Over the years she taught numerous adults and young people to read and communicate on a professional level. She was an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and head of the ECW until she moved to Weddington to live with her daughter and could no longer drive into Charlotte. Her joy was gardening and she was an involved Master Gardener for many years as well as volunteering at Wing Haven Gardens. The many people whose lives she touched knew her as a person who lived her life with a spirit of generosity. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 25, 2015 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 116 South Church St., Monroe, NC 28112. Following the service the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall. Mrs. Trevor is survived by her sons, George S.Trevor III and wife, Mary Keegan of Fairfax, California, L. Grant Trevor and wife June of Asheville and John R. Trevor and wife Beth of Montgomery, Alabama; daughters, Althea T. Callaway and husband Clifford of Avon, Colorado, Katherine T. Armstrong and husband J. Larry Helms of Monroe and Elizabeth T. Lowry and husband T. Britton of Weddington; sisters, Althea Underwood of Melbourne, Florida and Anne Grant of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wing Haven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary, 248 Ridgewood Ave., Charlotte, NC 28209 or The Episcopal Relief Fund, PO Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058.
