Francis Donald Lawrence

March 20, 1944 — January 17, 2021

F. Donald (Donnie) Lawrence passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021. Donnie was born on March 20, 1944 in Landrum, SC and moved to Monroe as a child. A lifelong resident he graduated from Monroe High School and NC State University. He married the love of his life Deborah Owen July 5, 1968 and raised three sons. Donnie was a local business owner starting his land surveying company F. Donald Lawrence and Associates in 1971. His greatest joy was his three sons choosing to join the business and work alongside him. When Deb retired from teaching, she too came to work at the business as the office manager. Donnie loved the country and being outdoors on his property. Living along Richardson Creek in New Salem brought him great happiness. Having family gatherings and providing his grandchildren with Thanksgiving tractor rides and treasure hunts were just a few of the memories he helped to create. In his forties he earned his pilot’s license. Flying became a passion and throughout his life he owned several different planes which he loved to take out on early morning flights. A humble man who never sought praise or accolades, he was a loyal friend to many and would help anyone in need. His fierce devotion to Deb was evident as he constantly doted over her and never left her side. His sons brought him immense pride and he instilled in them a strong work ethic and always marveled at the men, husbands and fathers they had become. Donnie’s six grandchildren were his treasures and he cherished each one of them. Donnie is survived by his wife Deb of 52 years, his sons Drew (Jennifer), Clint (Kristi), Will (Amy) and his six grandchildren Amelia and Benton, Lillian, Owen and Marjorie, and William Li. Sisters, Beth Rogers and Kathy Wall (Allen). He was preceded in death by his parents, Duford Lawrence and Evelyn Littlefield Lawrence and sister Joy Yates. There will be a private family service held at his home.
