Fred Carson Long, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on May 5, 1926 in Union County, son of the late Walter and Cordia Long. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 72 years, Jean Conder Long. Funeral services will be 3:00PM Sunday, October 1, 2017 at First Baptist Church, Monroe, NC, 109 W. Morrow Ave with the Rev. Dr. Chris Dawson officiating. Burial with, military honors, will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the Family Life Center of the church from 1:30 to 2:45PM on Sunday. Mr. Long was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the former owner, and founder, of Long Wiring Company, where he remained active in the business until his retirement in 2016. He served the city of Monroe as a Councilman for several years and as the city's Mayor from 1975 to 1987. He also served his community through various boards and committees, including membership in the Monroe Rotary Club where he received the Rotary Paul Harris Award and President of the Union County Chamber of Commerce. He was awarded the honor of Union County Man of the Year in 1984 and was inducted into the Union County Chamber of Commerce Business Leaders’ Hall of Fame in 2013. Mr. Long is survived by two daughters, Judy Davis and husband John of Mount Dora, FL and Debra Reed and husband Ron of Monroe; a sister Jewell Long Jones of Matthews, NC; grandchildren, Blair Davis-Veatch of Mount Dora, FL, Chelsea Reed of Oakboro and Fredrick Reed of Monroe; great-grandchildren, Madison Veatch and Jack Veatch; and many nieces and nephews.
