Gene was born to Henry Eugene Morgan and Cora Austin Morgan on April 28, 1927 in northern Union County, the youngest of three children. He grew up in the New Salem Community and graduated from New Salem High School in 1944. As a young boy he spent many idyllic days roaming the woods and banks of nearby Rocky River with childhood friends and his brother, Dwight, and his sister, Rachel. On June 27, 1945, Gene married his childhood sweetheart, Edna Earle Edwards, and soon after he entered the army near the end of World War II. After being discharged from the army, he and Edna started their family which included three sons. Gene began his career building furniture at Carriker Church Furniture Company which instilled his love of carpentry and furniture making. After completing a course of study in electronics, Gene began a long career as a TV technician and owned Monroe TV Center. After retirement Gene was able to return to his love of carpentry and making quality furniture, building a woodworking shop in his backyard where he spent many happy hours making cabinets for customers, building projects for his church, and designing custom furniture for his family. Gene loved his childhood church, Euto Baptist in New Salem, and he loved Wingate Baptist Church. Gene was active in church as long as he was able, serving as a deacon and was instrumental in setting up the video system at the church. Gene was devoted to his church and his Lord, choosing to live his faith by quiet example and serving as a role model for his family. One of his sons' favorite childhood memories was their dad reading Bible stories to them at bedtime. Gene's gentle and kind nature endeared him to many and his love of family was evident in all he did. He and Edna had 72 wonderful years together and remained the same sweet couple who adored each other just as they did as childhood sweethearts. Gene is predeceased by his parents and his siblings. Survivors left to cherish his memory are: his loving wife, Edna, and three sons and their wives: Danny Morgan and Barbara, of Wingate, David Morgan and Pam, of Chapel Hill, and Mark Morgan and Doreen of Mt.
