Geneva Jane (Newman) Hyde

August 9, 1917 — June 26, 2015

Geneva Newman Hyde, age 97, passed away on June 26, 2015. She was born in Cleveland County, NC on August 9, 1917, daughter to Minerva and Doc Fernando Newman. She was one of 9 children. Geneva was always involved in her church in Monroe and was a Sunday School teacher to the younger children for many years. When she moved to Charlotte, she continued her love of the Lord at Purcell Methodist Church where she made many friends. While in Charlotte, Geneva worked at Montaldo’s as a seamstress for several years. Geneva’s love of sewing continued as she made one-of-a-kind creations for her family and friends. Upon retirement, Geneva moved to Graham County in the North Carolina mountains and lived there for over 30 years. She attended Stecoah Baptist Church where she made many lifelong friends. Geneva was involved in her community, always helping others. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Geneva loved her family and was always involved with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was an amazing cook and loved cooking for her family. Geneva enjoyed traveling and especially going to the beach with the whole family. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, June 29, 2015 at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC. 28112. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will visit prior to the service starting at 10:00 AM. Geneva is survived by her husband, Dillard Hyde, of Stecoah Gap, her sister, Lil Fowler, and by her son, Hallman McCray (Jean) and her daughter Carolyn Franklin (Sam) and her daughter Judy Lane (Bill) and her daughter Nancy Horton (John). She is survived by her grandchildren Teresa Helms (Jerry), Cathy Brooks (Steve), Doug McCray (Kathy), Eric McCray (Tracy), Danny Earnhardt (Faye), Robin Smith, Michelle Westlake(Paul), Michael Lane (Kim), Janie Lane, Coleman Horton (Shannon) and Perry Horton (Lauren). She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Stecoah Baptist Church, 89 Hyde Town Road, Robbinsville, NC. 28771, or to a charity of your choice. Gordon Funeral Service is caring for the Hyde family.
