Haskell Eargle passed away on November 30, 2021 after a life well-lived. He was 94 years old. Haskell will be remembered as an admired artist, internationally acclaimed floral designer, generous benefactor, and loyal friend. Born in Waxhaw NC to the late Joseph Irvie and Ruth Burgess Eargle, he is survived by his brother Louie Eargle and several generations of adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His life will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 21, 2023, under the Historic Arbor of Pleasant Grove Campground. The Eargle family will receive friends following the service at their family home; 501 West South Main Street, Waxhaw, NC.
Haskell's passion for floral design began in his childhood, a natural talent he “grew into”. After graduating from high school in 1945, he began working in the floral industry, and except for his stint in the Army during the Korean War, continued for almost 70 years. In 1946 he took a job with Scholtz the Florist (Charlotte's first florist), then joined the staff at the Monroe Florist a decade later. Haskell eventually bought the business and ran it successfully until 1990. Recognized throughout the world for his creativity and unique ability to design in any style, Haskell was a featured artist on programs across the United States, in Mexico, England, Holland, Germany, Canada, and Taiwan. Haskell lectured and taught at major design events, garden clubs, and philanthropic groups. His work has been displayed in the Mint Museum of Charlotte, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and The White House. Haskell served on the board of directors of the American Institute of Floral Designers and is a past president of the NC State Floral Association and the Southern Retail Florists Association. In 1980, he had the honor of judging the prestigious Rose Bowl Parade. For 30 years he returned to Pasadena as a volunteer to help with floral arrangements on the floats. It was his association with Charisma Floats that became his segue to Hollywood and the opportunity to design at the 2000 and 2001 Academy Awards. Haskell will be remembered as “one of the most photographed floral designers in the world” because of his extensive work in magazines, advertisements, and catalogs.
Although he had an illustrious career, Haskell never lost sight of his Union County roots. He loved his life in Waxhaw and remained involved in community events, served on the Beautification Committee, and was a voice for historic preservation in the midst of growth. On May 2, 1998, Haskell received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Pfeiffer University. He was recognized as an award-winning designer, civic leader, and native son of North Carolina.
“Hack” had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He loved a good joke and enjoyed making people laugh. He loved working in his yard, and opening his home and gardens to share with others. Haskell loved a good story. You would often see him sitting on his front porch “holding court”. He loved all the children in his life, and was quick with advice as a self-proclaimed parenting expert. He loved the Pleasant Grove Campground and enjoyed spending time under The Arbor and visiting with neighbors, family, and friends. But most of all Haskell loved flowers and with them he made our lives a bit more beautiful!
