Harold Phillips

Harold Phillips, 90, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2012. He was born in Union County, NC on October 5, 1921 son of the late William Hoyte and Fronnie Baker Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a U S Army, WW II veteran and a retired rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM at Bethlehem United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:30 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. A faithful member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, having served in the following positions; Chairman of Administrative Board, Trustees, Men's Fellowship, Pastor Parish Relations, usher for 60 years and chief usher for 15 years, teacher of youth, Delegate to Annual Conference, Chairman to purchase church van, member council on Ministries and Class president. He also served on numerous district church committees. Mr. Phillips was initiated in Eastern Star Monroe Chapter 113, with his wife Chloe in 1950. He served as Worthy Patron nines times, Chaplain for a number of years and was presented a life membership in 1975. He served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of Camp Rainbow and chaired a number of Grand Chapter Committees. He was District Deputy Grand Patron, Grand Representative, Grand Chaplain and served four years as Grand Treasurer. He was raised in Monroe Lodge #244 in December 1947 and had the pleasure of having his son Gary present him his 50 year pin, Gary is also a member of the Monroe Lodge. Harold received his 60 year pin and Gary received a 25 year pin in the same ceremony. He served as Master in 1955, Treasurer for 20 years and was presented a Life Membership. He was a very active member of the Union County Shrine Club, serving as Secretary and Chairman Board of Directors since organized in 1962. A member of the OASIS Temple A.A.D.N.M.S of Charlotte, where he received Life membership for service. Past High Priest, Monroe Chapter #64, Past Master Solomon of the Silver Trowel #24. Past Commander of Malta Commandry #19 K.T; member of the Knights Masons, Knights of the York Cross of Honour and Lilly of the Valley Priory. Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Chloe Lathan Phillips, son, Gary H. Phillips and wife Angie of Raleigh, granddaughter, Juliana R. Phillips and grandson, Grant H. Phillips, also of Raleigh, sisters, Grace Phillips Green (Vance), Hazel Phillips Hargett, brother, Joe Phillips (Grace) all of Monroe and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Lynn Phillips, brothers, Stamey Phillips and Howard Phillips.
